An homage to the ubiquitous Black Jesus painting hung up in so many Black homes, barber shops, salons, restaurants and, of course, churches.

With so much social turmoil these days- specifically in response to marginalized people standing up for their right to a larger, more equitable share of the pie (the portfolios and profits of elites) and the right to simply exist without being policed- we at Do Right see this as a perfect and necessary moment to revisit a symbol of hope, resistance and unconditional love- right in time for Lent as we count down the days to Easter Sunday.

The image of Black Jesus is symbolic for many reasons. Primarily, the image of Black Messiah is used to reject the white supremacist ideologies inherently instilled within Christianity due to Judeo-Christian colonization. It's also meant to be closer to the historical accuracy of what Jesus likely looked like while also giving some fluidity and range to his image. We also are thinking of Palestine and the marginalized people who are currently being displaced and living in a perpetual state of conflict and unrest all across the Middle East and African region.
